Essential Information

A teacher's residency certificate program is comparable to a doctor's residency, in which a doctor works as a salaried professional at a hospital while taking additional training in his or her chosen field. Likewise, teachers work in schools and teach under the supervision of a mentor while pursuing a higher teaching certification. In the field of teaching, certification is equivalent to licensure. Teachers who complete the program are awarded their residency certificates. These programs generally last one or two years.

Education prerequisites vary by state. In some states like Washington, students must complete a certification program in order to obtain a residency teacher certificate. Other states award a residency teacher certificate if the student fulfills certain requirements. These may include possessing basic literacy skills, passing a subject area assessment, and having earned 4-year degree from an accredited institution. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 may be necessary.

Residency Certificate Programs

Potential teachers with a residency certificate will learn to develop programs of study, supervise students, and abide by state teaching regulations. They may be required to earn a master's degree during the course of the program. Residency teachers are typically evaluated twice a year by the school principal or other qualified officials. Specific topics of study include:

  • Introduction to teaching
  • Approaches to teaching
  • Curriculum development
  • Classroom safety and CPR
  • Classroom ethics

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

From 2014-2024, employment of elementary school teachers (except special education teachers) is predicted to rise 6%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov). Jobs for high school teachers are also expected to rise 6% during that time. Furthermore, the government agency noted that in May 2015, elementary school teachers (except special education teachers) earned a median annual salary of $54,890 while secondary school teachers (except special and career/technical educators) earned a median wage of $57,200.

Teacher residency certificates are vital to developing the skills necessary to be an effective teacher, teaching you to run a classroom effectively and efficiently. These programs are equivalent to licensure, ensuring you can legally teach within the United States.
