Several New Jersey schools offer programs in restaurant management and hospitality management, which typically incorporates restaurant management courses. Most of these schools are two-year colleges that provide certificate and degree programs in the hospitality field. Students acquire management skills in addition to business and hospitality training. Those pursuing a certificate or degree also get a chance to participate in an internship in the hospitality industry. Bergen Community College
Students interested in restaurant management will find a comprehensive hospitality program offered in Paramus through Bergen Community College. This school provides various associate degree and certificate programs with instruction that aspiring restaurant managers may find valuable. Students can select business technologies Associate in Applied Science programs in general hospitality studies, catering and banquet management, hospitality management, event and planning management and culinary entrepreneurship. An Associate in Science in Business Administration with a hospitality option is also available. The college additionally offers a number of certificate programs that cover different areas of the hospitality field, including hospitality management, event planning and management, hospitality operations, culinary science and the culinary arts.
County College of Morris
County College of Morris is located in Randolph. The school offers several programs that aspiring restaurant managers may be interested in. Prospective students will find a restaurant management and event planning certificate program that can help them prepare for a career in the field. This program trains students in food management, food safety, human resources and food purchasing.
Students can also consider an associate degree program in hospitality management with a restaurant emphasis. This program includes courses in dining room service, food production, nutrition and food management. Students may also participate in a cooperative course that will help them obtain professional experience.
Fairleigh Dickinson University
The Florham and Metropolitan colleges of Fairleigh Dickinson University, located in Madison and Teaneck, respectively, offer a bachelor's degree in hotel and restaurant management. Students in this program complete liberal arts, business and hospitality management courses to earn the degree. There are many classes specifically geared toward prospective restaurant managers, such as managerial challenges in the workplace, food and beverage management, quantity food production, nutrition and accounting for hospitality managers. A dual-degree B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant Management/M.S. in Hospitality Management program that typically takes students five years to complete is available as well. Individuals who already have a bachelor's degree and at least three years of experience in the hospitality field have the option to obtain a Master of Science in Hospitality Management Studies.
Hudson County Community College
Located in Jersey City, Hudson County Community College is a two-year college with an associate degree program in hospitality management with an option for hotel and restaurant management. Students are trained to perform several management functions, including cost control, entrepreneurship and restaurant operations management. The school also offers an associate degree program in culinary arts that prepares students for a variety of entry-level positions, including restaurant manager.
Mercer County Community College
West Windsor-based Mercer County Community College has an associate degree in hotel, restaurant and institution management. This degree program provides courses in human resources management, hospitality law, hotel management and lodging operations, food preparation and hospitality accounting. An internship is also required. Many of the credits earned in this program can be applied to the bachelor's degree programs at several schools that have articulation agreements with Mercer County Community College. This school also offers a catering management certificate program that requires students to complete a hotel, restaurant and institution management internship in addition to courses covering food service sanitation, garde manger, food production and advanced culinary arts.
Raritan Valley Community College
Raritan Valley Community College administers an associate degree program in food and beverage management at its campus in Branchburg. The Business and Public Service Department provides this program in partnership with Hunterdon County Polytech Career Academy. Students receive instruction in commercial food service operations, cost control, catering management, food preparation and other subjects that prepare them for entry-level, supervisory positions in restaurants, casinos, country clubs and hotels.
Rowan College at Burlington County
Rowan College at Burlington County in Pemberton offers an associate degree program and a certificate program for those interested in restaurant management courses. The curriculum for the certificate program and Associate of Applied Science in Food Service Management Technology program includes courses in food service and restaurant management, food service sanitation, nutrition and food service cost control. Aspiring restaurant and hospitality managers may also be interested in the other degree programs that offer food and beverage management instruction at this school: hospitality and tourism management and casino and resort management. Students in all of these hospitality programs have the opportunity to receive training in the school's café, production kitchen and teaching theater.
Rutgers University - Camden
Rutgers University offers a bachelor's degree program in business administration with a hospitality management concentration at its campus in Camden. This program combines business management training with hospitality training. The curriculum includes courses in human resource management, culinary management and hospitality facility management.
Stockton University is located in Galloway. This school provides a bachelor's degree program in hospitality and tourism management studies. Although this program is not specifically designed for restaurant management training, students will find courses that may be relevant to prospective restaurant managers. For example, the program includes courses like food and beverage management, event and catering management, facilities management and accounting. The program also provides an opportunity to obtain professional experience in the field.
Union County College
Union County College operates out of Cranford, New Jersey. This is a two-year school with both certificate and associate degree programs in a number of academic and vocational areas. Students interested in restaurant management training will find an associate degree program in hotel, tourism and restaurant management. It provides comprehensive preparation for a restaurant management career, and students learn about food and beverage planning and control, hospitality marketing and front office operations.
