California State University - Los Angeles
California State University - Los Angeles (CSULA) is located near downtown and has an undergrad certificate program in fashion merchandising, which combines coursework in fashion and marketing. CSULA also offers a bachelor's degree program in art with an option in fashion, fiber and materials or a business administration bachelor's degree in retailing.
Certificate in Fashion Retailing
This 18-credit certificate program in fashion retailing trains students for a variety of careers in the fashion industry. Some of the required curriculum includes fashion merchandising concepts and processes, social aspects of fashion, textiles and fashion promotion. Students can elect certain classes in marketing, sales and retailing.
Los Angeles Trade and Technical College
Los Angeles Trade and Technical College (LATTC) is close to downtown Los Angeles and has a fashion school with certificate and associate's degree programs in fashion merchandising. Instructors in the programs are experienced in fashion retail and manufacturing.
Certificate of Achievement in Fashion Merchandising
This 45-credit certificate program in fashion merchandising includes classes in retail merchandising, cultural perspectives, fashion promotion, wholesale merchandising, international business and fashion buying. Students can take a number of fashion-related computer courses, such as Illustrator and Photoshop, as well as an internship. Students who wish to enter the Associate in Science degree program must take the courses required for the certificate program, as well as 18 additional academic credits.
Santa Ana College
Santa Ana College (SAC) is southeast of Los Angeles and offers certificate and associate's degree programs in fashion merchandising through its family and consumer studies division.
Certificate of Achievement in Fashion Merchandising
The fashion merchandising certificate program at SAC emphasizes retail merchandising, distribution and promotion. Students must complete 44.5-47.5 credits, which could include classes in fashion selection, buying, textiles and visual merchandising. Some electives might include management, fashion modeling and fashion sketching. The program also includes a cooperative work experience. The school's associate's degree program includes much of the same coursework as the certificate program, but students who wish to pursue this degree should complete required general education coursework in psychology, communications and sociology.
Two schools located roughly 25 miles from Los Angeles have programs related to retail merchandising. Los Angeles Pierce College has a certificate program in retail management, which includes studies in retail merchandising. Graduates of the program earn a certificate from the college and an industry certificate from the Western Association of Food Chains. California State Polytechnic University - Pomona is part of the California State University system and offers a bachelor's degree program in apparel merchandising and management with an emphasis in fashion retailing.
