Although there are 94 colleges and institutions of higher learning in Oregon, only three schools offer degree programs related to retail merchandising. These include George Fox University and Oregon State University. Students may choose to earn a bachelor's degree or a minor from either of the universities. Field experiences, seminars, and/or an internship is required of bachelor's degree programs. In addition, George Fox University offers students the chance to complete their final year studying at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. George Fox University
George Fox University is a four-year Christian school in Newberg that was ranked in the top 30 of 'Best Regional Universities West' by U.S. News and World Report in the magazine's 2016 Best American Colleges ranking. This school offers a bachelor's degree program in art and design that includes interior design and fashion design concentrations. Students enrolled in either of these programs will earn 37 credit hours worth of core classes covering topics such as textiles sciences, fashion merchandising and apparel construction, as well as classes pertaining to architecture and interior design. This program culminates in a senior seminar and field experience. Alternatively, 21 credit hour minors in merchandising and interior design are also available.
Linn-Benton Community College
LBCC is a public Albany-based community college that offers undergraduate training in a number of diverse academic fields. Students looking to study retail merchandising can enroll in the school's Associate of Science in Merchandising Management program. This A.S. program is specifically tailored to students looking to transfer to Oregon State. The program includes courses that introduce students to fundamental concepts and ideas in the field, leaving graduates prepared to transfer to OSU and pursue a baccalaureate degree in merchandising management.
Oregon State University
Located in Corvallis, Oregon State University is a four-year university that offers a bachelor's degree in merchandising management through the School of Design and Human Environment in the university's College of Business. Students in this program will take classes in subjects such as textiles, retail buying, fashion trend analysis and retail merchandising. Required field experiences include a field orientation class and internship. Students in this field take classes that emphasize the merchandising of apparel, textiles and consumer behavior. Additional resources available to students at this university include the Apparel Innovation Center, a mentoring environment that offers workshops and consulting services to assist students with their studies.
