Louisiana State University

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in which students can learn how to improve a company's products and services to better serve the public. The industrial engineering degree programs prepare students for various careers in the manufacturing, aviation and process industries. Students also have the opportunity to take part in internships that relate to industrial engineering. These internships allow students to gain professional experience while understanding how engineering theory applies to the real world. The school also encourages students to take part in a study abroad program in an effort to learn more about global and international economies.

Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering

Students need to earn a total of 125 credits to earn this bachelor's degree. The courses are spread over four years and cover concepts like construction management, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and industrial engineering. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to learn how the scientific process can be applied to professional settings so that companies can improve business practices. Within the degree program, students can take a specialized class in safety engineering. Topics in the class include accident prevention management, cost analysis and implementation of safety procedures.

Master of Science in Industrial Engineering

This program offers an in-depth study of industrial engineering through classes that cover engineering economy, engineering statistics, quality control and data analysis. Students who want to earn this master's degree can choose between four tracks in healthcare, human factors, information technology or supply chain systems. The human factors track includes a specific curriculum that covers safety engineering and human factors engineering. In the human factors engineering course, students learn about workplace design, environmental effects on performance and control design. As part of the degree program requirements, students can choose to write a thesis or complete a project. By the end of the program, students can transition into mid-level careers or prepare for a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering.

Other Schools

Although the number of schools in the New Orleans area offering safety engineering programs is limited, students have a couple more options. One option is Tulane University, which gives students the opportunity to earn a Master of Science in Public Health in Occupational and Environmental Health/Industrial Hygiene. The school is located about five miles outside of downtown New Orleans. Southeastern Louisiana University, which is located about 58 miles away from downtown New Orleans, offers two degree programs. There is an Associate of Applied Science in Industrial Technology with a concentration in occupational safety, health and environment and a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety, Health and Environment. Though the school is located in Hammond, some classes can be taken in New Orleans.
