Master of Arts in Professional Counseling with Specialization in School Counseling

This program consists of 60 hours of coursework, a practicum and internships and usually takes three years or more to complete. Students have the option to complete a thesis, but the practical experiences are required. The internship is conducted under supervision in an agency or school, while the clinical practicum involves conducting actual counseling sessions for an academic grade.

Courses are offered in a variety of counseling and therapy topics, as well as professional practices and ethics. Prospective school counselors can gain knowledge of curriculum planning, leadership, evaluations and proactive counseling methods through the introductory and advanced school counseling classes. Other courses examine loss and grief recovery, community-based counseling, group and individual counseling, career counseling, substance abuse and abnormal human behavior.

In addition to earning a degree, candidates for licensure as school counselors in the state of Texas must also pass the TExES (teacher certification) exam and have completed two years of teaching. While in their practicum semester, students can begin the application process to receive approval to take the exam.
