Houston Community College

Fashion design programs offered through Houston Community College's visual and performing arts division provide a number of classes that include sewing components. Classes are taught at the school's Central College and are designed to provide students the training needed to obtain entry-level positions in fashion-related fields. Credits earned in the certificate programs can be applied toward associate's degrees.

Commercial Sample Maker Certificate

This program will prepare students for entry-level positions in the industry of fashion production. Topics include apparel computer systems, design construction techniques, flat pattern design, fashion design and illustration, dressmaking and pattern grading. A three-credit internship is also required.

Men's Tailoring and Alterations Certificate

Students in this certificate program take classes in basic alterations and custom tailoring. It requires two semesters of study and completion of 21 credits. Enrollees study many of the same topics as those addressed in the custom dressmaking and alterations program, but with an emphasis on men's clothing rather than women's.

Patternmaking Certificate

Students in this program participate in classes which train them in the methods and technology needed to create, grade and mark patterns for the women's ready-to-wear clothing industry. The certificate requires two semesters of study.
