Skin Care Degrees by Degree Program Level

Students interested in aesthetics will typically find education through certificate programs at 2-year colleges and cosmetology schools, rather than degree programs.

Essential Information

While in an aesthetics certificate program, students learn the basics of regular skin care, including preventive maintenance and treatments. Aesthetics programs typically require that students attend both classroom lectures and gain laboratory experience, through which they can put their lessons to practical use in a simulated spa environment. Skin care programs are also open to working professionals who are looking to expand their cosmetology skills. Many programs provide evening and weekend courses.

Certificate in Aesthetics

Applicants may need a high school diploma or equivalent to be admitted. Aspiring skin care technicians must learn the basic tasks performed in spas and salons. Courses typically revolve around the practical applications of the following:

  • Skin analysis
  • Exfoliation
  • Basic lymphatic draining of the face and neck
  • Acne and Rosacea treatments
  • Basic makeup application
  • Chemical peeling and facial masks

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, www.bls.gov), skin care specialists held 40,190 jobs in 2015. Most of these jobs were in the personal care services industry. The average annual salary for skin care specialists in 2015 was $35,300, stated the BLS. The employment of skin care specialists is expected to grow by 12% between 2014 and 2024, which is faster than average for all occupations.

Students pursuing a career in skin care will usually find relevant education in the form of certificate programs offered at colleges and cosmetology schools. These programs provide hands-on training in areas such as skin analysis, exfoliation, makeup application, and more.
