Essential Information

Pennsylvania schools provide a range of software training options, from noncredit professional development classes to full undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Individual software training courses usually teach students to use specific applications, such as those for productivity, Web development or graphic design. Degree programs in the software field usually focus on software engineering and teach students to create their own applications rather than use specific applications. Software training courses usually provide hands-on opportunities to use a program's features, while software engineering degree programs often include projects and cooperative education.

Community College of Allegheny County

The Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) consists of four campuses in the greater Pittsburgh area. This school's Center for Professional Development offers a comprehensive array of software training courses in some of the most commonly used applications, including Adobe products for graphic design, Web development and desktop publishing. Microsoft Office courses covering spreadsheets, word processing and presentation software are also available. Special workshops in security and other software-related topics are available, as well as private training in specific computer applications.

Drexel University

Founded in 1891, Drexel University in Philadelphia provides software training for creators rather than users through its software engineering programs at the bachelor's and master's degree levels. The bachelor's degree program includes three cooperative work experiences, a software design project and courses that teach students to design and improve software applications. The master's degree program features specializations in information science and technology, computer science or engineering. Students can also choose to enroll in an accelerated combined bachelor's and master's degree program that includes two co-op sessions.
