Students looking for sonography programs in Georgia have a number of options. Sonography programs in the state lead to certificates, diplomas, associate's and bachelor's degrees. Degree programs include general education classes in addition to major coursework and all programs incorporate clinical or practicum elements to the curriculum.

Armstrong State University

Armstrong State University in Savannah offers a bachelor's degree program in radiologic sciences with an emphasis in sonography. The core radiologic sciences curriculum includes classes in imaging pathology, human physiology, health research, and patient care; students pursuing the sonography track receive further instruction in areas like scanning techniques, ultrasound instrumentation, and vascular sonography. In addition, the program requires that students undergo several sessions of clinical experience in a supervised professional setting. Armstrong's radiologic sciences department also offers a post-baccalaureate certificate program in advanced imaging.

Columbus Technical College

Students can earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Diagnostic Medical Sonography at this technical college located in Columbus. Required program courses provide training in ultrasound transducers, sonographic physical assessment, history of DMS, and high-resolution sonography. Students also undergo study in pediatric, vascular, and obstetric sonography. Required clinical practicums allow students to administer supervised patient care.

Darton State College

Based in Albany, Darton State College houses an Associate of Science (AS) program in diagnostic medical sonography. Students take classes in clinical professionalism, ultrasound physics, and neurosonology, in addition to completing pelvic, obstetric, and abdomen ultrasound training. Multiple external practicums are required, as are general education courses in subjects like English, history, and communications. Darton DMS graduates may sit for the ARDMS obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), abdomen, neurosonology, breast, and physics/instrumentation examinations.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College

The AAS in Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Georgia Northwestern Technical College takes place at the school's Floyd County campus located in Rome. This CAAHEP-accredited program incorporates study in sonographic instrumentation, sectional anatomy, and physical assessment procedures, among other subjects Students are required to partake in external clinical practicums in supervised medical facilities. Students also take a course that prepares them to pass the ARDMS certification exams.

Grady Health System Professional Schools

Grady's Schools of Radiation and Imaging Technologies is located in Atlanta. The School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography confers a certificate in this field. Prior to admission, students must complete prerequisite courses in topics such as biology, physics, medical terminology, and statistics. The full-time program lasts 18 months and comprises training in image evaluation, patient communication, non-routine procedures, and professional ethics, along with instruction directly related to the abdomen and OB/GYN ARDMS examinations.

Gwinnett Technical College

At Lawrenceville-based Gwinnett Technical College (GTC), students can earn an Associate of Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The program includes training in pelvic, vascular, abdominal , and small parts sonography, as well as instruction in allied health sciences terminology, anatomy, and sonographic appearance. GTC also offers a pre-DMS certificate program that covers prerequisite study necessary for the commencement of the DMS degree program.

Ogeechee Technical College

Located in Statesboro, Ogeechee Tech offers certificate and diploma programs in sonography. The school's health care science certificate program includes a sonography track that incorporates study in health science physics, psychology, anatomy, and medical terminology. The certificate curriculum comprises 34 credit hours. Ogeechee Tech's DMS diploma program is CAAHEP-accredited and covers such topics as sonography foundations, pelvic sonography, abdominal sonography, and first-, second-, and third-trimester obstetrics. Students also perform several sessions of supervised patient care in professional medical settings.

Career Requirements

Of the schools profiled below that offer certificate or degree programs, several have programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), which means graduates are automatically qualified to sit for the certification exams administered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Certification is not required to practice as a medical sonographer, but employers often prefer it.
