Miami Dade College - Medical Campus
Sonography students at MDC must fulfill prerequisite requirements in subjects including English, math, natural sciences, and human physiology and anatomy before they apply for the program. Though the school's admission process is open, all health sciences students must undergo a background check prior to their commencement of program classes.
Associate in Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
MDC's diagnostic medical sonography program mandates coursework in such areas as imaging protocols, film critique, directed research, and acoustical instrumentation. Students learn about various types of sonography, including pediatric, abdominal, and obstetric, as well as echocardiography and neurosonography. Several periods of supervised clinical training are included in the curriculum; these take place at various designated facilities throughout the county.
Nova Southeastern University
NSU is a private, nonprofit school that houses programs that specialize in both vascular and cardiovascular sonography. The bachelor's degree program in vascular sonography may be earned alone or paired with a simultaneous Master of Health Science program, while the cardiovascular programs are offered separately at both the bachelor's and master's degree levels.
Bachelor of Science in Medical Sonography
To earn the Bachelor of Health Science degree in medical sonography from NSU, students must complete classes in epidemiology, health policy, ultrasound physics, and small parts sonography. Additional required courses cover topics such as health care conflict resolution, aging and health care, and leadership. Students undergo laboratory study in areas like cerebrovascular and peripheral arterial testing, and a series of clinical practicums is required to complete the program.
Bachelor of Science in Cardiovascular Sonography
The Bachelor of Health Science program in cardiovascular sonography incorporates mandatory study in subjects such as physiology and anatomy, professional writing, and cultural aspects of health care. Students undertake laboratory courses in venous testing, ultrasound physics, and abdominal vascular testing, as well as intermediate and advanced levels of cardiac sonography. As with the general and vascular sonography program, cardiovascular students must partake in a number of professional externships in order to graduate.
Master of Health Science in Cardiovascular Sonography
Students in the cardiovascular sonography master's degree program are required to take classes in research methods and medical publication writing. Beyond those, students undertake coursework on topics like health care ethics, biostatistics, and health care management, in addition to numerous courses in cardiac sonography and ultrasound physics. Master's degree candidates also participate in a practicum in which they devise a health-promoting, community-oriented intervention to serve a traditionally disadvantaged or underserved population. Supervised clinical practicums in professional settings are a mandatory part of the curriculum.
Broward College - North Campus
Broward College's associate degree program in sonography is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and designed to transfer to certain 4-year colleges and programs in the state of Florida.
Associate in Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
The 77-credit diagnostic medical sonography program at BC is a 6-semester program that comprises courses in physiology and anatomy, sonographic imaging principles, and circulatory system sonography, among other topics. General education classes in disciplines such as math, composition, and speech are also required. Students undertake additional coursework in areas like echocardiography, medical sonographic physics, and abdominal sonography, and clinical practicums are required during the last five semesters of the program.
