Choosing a Sound Technician School

There are a few things to consider when looking for sound technician schools, including:

  • Finding a school with career counseling and strong job placement rates.
  • Certificate program courses that include audio technology, integrated audiovisual systems, local area networks, information technology and digital network transmission.
  • Schools with professional, up-to-date equipment and on-campus sound recording facilities.
  • Programs that offer internship or apprenticeship opportunities.

Certificate Programs

Aspiring sound technicians can earn a certificate in music recording technology or audio production. These programs prepare students for entry-level jobs as assistants in sound studios by providing basic education in music theory and technical training in mixing and mastering. Certificate programs can usually be completed in less than two years.

Associate's Degree Programs

Associate's degree programs for sound technicians combine conceptual coursework with hands-on training using industry-standard audio equipment. Many schools have on-campus facilities with state-of-the-art equipment, but internship and apprenticeship opportunities may also be available. Graduates can get an entry-level job in the field or transfer into a bachelor's degree program.

Bachelor's Degree Programs

Bachelor's degree programs for aspiring sound technicians provide an introduction to the theory and practice of audio production, as well as more advanced courses in topics such as audio mixing, psychoacoustics and facility management. Students may also choose electives that prepare them for specific careers, such as music recording and soundtracking for video production.

Sound technician programs are offered by colleges and universities and can lead to certificates, associate's degrees or bachelor's degrees. These programs provide students with an opportunity to learn about industry recording practices and equipment.
