CUNY Kingsborough Community College

Kingsborough Community College was established in 1963 and is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. The surgical technology program is available through the nursing department, and it is nationally accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology

The various components of this degree program take place in actual clinical settings, labs and classrooms. Students learn about surgical instrumentation and surgical procedures. They take courses in surgical technology where they learn about the operative environment, including surgical-medical terminology, sterilization methods, organization structure, various surgical team members and their functions, methods of communication and technological sciences as applied to surgical technology.

Students are also instructed in aseptic techniques, surgical gloving, gowning and scrubbing, draping principles, surgical sutures and needles, case preparation basics, skin preparation and perioperative routines. The program covers the physiology of wound healing, anesthesia and surgical pharmacology. Students are introduced to general surgery and specific surgical specialties, like urological and gynecological surgery, through courses in medical procedures. Students also participate in four practicum experiences.

Bergen Community College

Certificate in Surgical Technology

To enter this one-year surgical technology certificate program, an applicant needs a high school diploma.
