Graduates can take the certification exam through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting to earn the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credentials. Saint Louis Community College

Saint Louis Community College (STLCC) offers a variety of academic options for aspiring students, including certificates of proficiency, certificates of specialization, accelerated degree programs and various types of associate degree programs. STLCC also offers career and technical education programs.

Certificate of Proficiency in Surgical Technology

This school offers a 1-year surgical technology certificate program at its Forest Park campus. This program admits students on a first-come/first-served basis. Students take courses in operating room communication, surgical procedures, pharmacology and sociology. The program has several math and science prerequisites, including a basic math assessment test, microbiology and anatomy and physiology. In courses such as introduction to surgical technology and fundamentals of surgical technology, students learn proper procedures for preparing for surgery, handling tools and providing patient care before, during and after surgery.

During the surgical procedures courses, students study different surgical specialty areas, including complications related to each procedure. During principles of operating room communication, students learn correct medical and surgical terminology, as well as how communication in the operating room works. The program also includes two surgical technology clinicals, which allow students to experience how everything in the operating room works together. The clinicals allow participants to use their knowledge and to develop skills through hands-on experience incorporating terminology and various surgical principles in a real-world setting.

Associate in Applied Science in Surgical Technology

This associate's degree program requires the completion of 63 credits. Prerequisite courses cover elementary algebra and introductory biology. The first year explores topics like general microbiology, anatomy and physiology, principles of surgical technology, surgical equipment and surgical pharmacology. Clinical practice coursework is also included.
