Those seeking teacher certification in New Jersey have a number of schools and programs from which to choose. Programs may be devoted to elementary school grades or secondary school grades, and a bachelor's degree may be required for admission to a certification program. In addition to the graduation requirements to earn a degree or certificate, aspiring teachers must sit for an exam to qualify for state licensure.


Fairleigh Dickinson University

Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck is a 4-year, private school that offers more than 120 associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs. It's the first American college to have an overseas campus and offers teacher certification programs at both the elementary and secondary levels. Certification and bachelor's degree combination programs are available, and credits can be applied toward a Master of Arts in Teaching as well. The combined undergrad/graduate program can be completed in five years, with 15 credits needed past the certification/bachelor's degree curriculum. Other certifications include a preschool through grade 3 MAT program, a middle school endorsement, and a MAT English as a Second Language certification, for grades K-12.

Richard Stockton College of New Jersey

A 4-year, liberal arts school in Galloway, Richard Stockton College of New Jersey was ranked No. 53 among northern universities in 2016 by U.S. News and World Report. Students in its teacher certification program can train to become instructors at both the elementary and secondary levels. Admission requires a bachelor's degree in a content area. Certification is achieved by successfully passing Praxis exams in addition to completing the coursework and experiences required of scholastic programs. Additional endorsements are available to those who successfully complete a certification program; these are in bilingual/bicultural education, English as a Second Language (ESL), learning disabilities teacher/consultant, preschool to third grade or special education certification.
