Essential Information

A majority of the Louisiana-based schools listed in this article are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Students can pursue teaching programs at the associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree levels, and specializations may be available in curriculum and instruction, elementary education, middle school education, secondary education, early childhood education or special education.

Individuals who want to become teachers but have unrelated bachelor's degrees can look to alternative certification preparation programs. Additionally, existing teachers who would like to work in another instructional field can enroll in an add-on certification program; depending on the add-on subject, participants may qualify to work gifted teachers, school librarians, early childhood educators or reading specialists.

Delgado Community College

Delgado Community College is found in New Orleans and offers foundational coursework for students who wish to continue on to earn a bachelor's degree. Required program courses include geography, applied algebra, physical science, teaching in diverse settings and English composition. The program provides training for individuals interested in teaching grades 1-5. Students are admitted to the program twice a year during the spring and fall. They must interview for the program as well as successfully pass a criminal background check. While earning their associate's degree, students complete a portfolio.

Grambling State University

Grambling's university is accredited by NCATE and offers certification for students who wish to become PK-3, 4-8 or 7-12 teachers. While earning their alternate licensure, students gain paid experience. Those who desire to enroll in the alternative licensure program must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited university and accept a full-time teaching position. The school also has a lab dedicated to helping instructors and students prepare for the PRAXIS examinations.

Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College

Louisiana State University is found in Baton Rouge and prepares students for certification. The PK-3 teacher education program has a cohort format where students attend seminars and progress as a unit. While earning a minor in special education, students explore learning and behavior principles, instructional practices and transition planning. Graduate students have the opportunity to compete for assistantships that include a tuition exemption and a monthly stipend.

Louisiana Tech University

Ruston's Louisiana Tech University has teaching programs that are accredited by NCATE and offer add-on certifications in addition to professional development opportunities. Once they've earned their bachelor's degree in early childhood education, graduates are certified teachers. Those who have a bachelor's degree in an area other than teaching might be interested in the university's Second Careers in Teaching program where they also earn a master's degree. In addition to a variety of alternative certification plans of study, the university also offers online classes.

McNeese State University

McNeese State University is located in Lake Charles and features an alternate certification program that allows students to simultaneously become certified and teach full-time. Accepted non-degree areas for alternative certification include art education, middle school science, secondary education and early childhood education. Add-on endorsement options for graduate students include reading specialist and educational diagnostician. For field experiences, students choose from classroom-based, professional development and non-instructional experiences.

Nicholls State University

Thibodaux is home to Nicholls State University, which offers nationally recognized programs through NCATE, the National Association of School Psychologists and the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. Teaching programs also prepare students for certification. The school features a teacher certification-only program for community members looking to switch careers. The flexible master's degree program prepares graduate students for licensure and allows them to work while earning their degree. Full assistantships at the university pay students a monthly stipend and provide tuition waivers.

Southeastern Louisiana University

Southeastern Louisiana University is found in Hammond and offers alternative and add-on certification. An apprenticeship model is used while students are earning undergraduate and graduate certification. Master's degree program courses cover educational research, child development, instruction for diverse populations as well as theory and curriculum. Add-on certification options are reading specialist, early childhood and gifted education. The university's student organizations include a teaching honor society, an education association for students and a student council for gifted students.

Tulane University of Louisiana

New Orleans' Tulane University is accredited by the Teacher Accreditation Council and prepares students for certification as well as licensure. Students in the certification program earn a degree in a content field instead of earning a degree in education. Content field options include foreign languages, mathematics, economics and political science. Post-baccalaureate certification courses are offered during the evenings on a part-time basis, and a clinical capstone is included in the early childhood education program.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette

The University of Louisiana is found in Lafayette and offers add-on certifications in library science, special education, computer literacy and adaptive physical education. Student organizations include the Student Association for the Education of Young Children, an international honor society and the Association of Professional Educators of Louisiana. Courses in the middle school education program include information literacy, academic writing, reading in content areas and adolescent psychology.

University of New Orleans

New Orleans is home to a university that is the only post-secondary institution in the state that offers certification for each area of special education. The university prepares future teachers and professional counselors. The undergraduate program is divided into sections that include field experiences, specific courses and candidate assessments, allowing students to determine whether or not they'd like to become teachers. The master's degree program is intended for individuals who have a degree in a non-teaching field and would like to earn initial teaching certification. The graduate program allows certified students to earn add-on certification as well as a Master of Education degree.

Career Requirements

In order to qualify for jobs as public school teachers, individuals must be licensed by the state. Those who wish to teach in private schools are not required to be licensed. License applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree and successfully complete a teacher preparation program. States also require individuals to complete a general teaching certification test. While there are several schools in Louisiana that offer teaching programs, this article will only cover ten of the largest.
