University of Texas at San Antonio

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) offers interdisciplinary degrees through its Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching. Students can also enroll in relevant programs through the College of Education and Human Development.

Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies

Preparation for an interdisciplinary studies degree includes courses in communications, math, natural sciences, humanities, social sciences and civilization, in addition to degree-specific and certification classes. Certificate options include bilingual education, generalist, language arts, math and special education, and span elementary, secondary or combined class ranges.

Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification

Students with bachelor's degrees can transfer qualifying credit hours in order to earn Texas teaching certification in subjects including English, English as a second language, life sciences, physical sciences, social studies, physical education, special education, art and languages.

Master of Arts in Bicultural and Bilingual Studies

This UTSA program is designed to attract students from many disciplines. It offers a concentration in bilingual education and has both thesis and non-thesis options.

Master of Arts in School Psychology

Students receive training in psychological development, assessment, crisis intervention and psychopathology. Required credits include fieldwork and a school internship. Graduates are prepared to apply for a state license in educational psychology and national certification by the National Association of School Psychologists.

Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision

This program offers students with master's degrees in counseling the theoretical and clinical background to manage a school counseling department and train school counselors.

University of the Incarnate Word

Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies

This program for early childhood to sixth-grade teachers includes general education and interdisciplinary studies curricula in addition to courses in reading instruction, special education and professional development. Graduates passing the appropriate Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) exam will be certified to teach self-contained classes up to sixth grade. The program requires the completion of 130 credits in areas such as American politics, the history of Texas, diversity in education and student assessment methods.

Master's Programs in Education

Three programs exist for bachelor's degree-holders seeking a master's degree in education. A Master of Arts degree program is designed for the student who wants to earn a graduate degree while pursuing courses in a subject area outside UIW. Students seeking to complete the full 36 hours of coursework at UIW can enroll in the Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree program. The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program completes coursework for a master's degree while meeting the practicum and internship requirements for teaching certification. Concentrations exist in adult education, general education, student services in higher education and school leadership.

Doctor of Philosophy in Education

The doctoral program at UIW offers concentrations in international education and entrepreneurship, higher education and organizational leadership. All three include core courses in leadership, ethics, statistics and research methodology, and all require a doctoral dissertation.
