Essential Information

Electronics technician courses are usually found in certificate or diploma programs that can lead to careers in fields like research and development or manufacturing. Usually lasting less than one year, these programs may be completed online or on the campus of a college or university. Students often participate in hands-on labs as they gain an understanding of circuits, semiconductors, microprocessors and testing tools.

Students in an electronics technician program learn to create, test and repair circuits; troubleshoot semiconductors; and use and interface microprocessors. Digital logic and programming are covered, and students gain hands-on experience using testing and diagnostic equipment, such as multimeters and soldering irons. Graduates of these programs may be qualified to sit for the Certified Electronics Technician test offered by the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET).

Comprehensive Circuits Course

In this generally required entry-level course, students master the theoretical underpinnings of circuits and how to work with alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC), along with analog and digital circuits. Integrated circuits are part of the syllabus, as is learning how to read and understand schematic drawings. In hands-on labs, students design, test and analyze circuits and power supplies. They learn how to determine necessary circuit repairs and carry them out, along with necessary adjustments and installation of new or replacement parts.

Introduction to Semiconductors Course

In this required class, the concepts behind semiconductors are introduced. In addition to classroom learning, students perform lab work on semiconductors, specifically diodes and bipolar junction transistors. The proper methods for light-emitting diode (LED) diagnostics and troubleshooting are demonstrated. Students also use oscillators and optoisolators, along with exploring a variety of amplifiers, like collector and base, push-pull, power, operational, multistage and tune.

Microprocessors for Electronics Technicians Course

Students get a theoretical and practical introduction to microprocessors and how they work in this required class. Coursework covers how to use different circuits, design systems with microprocessors and interface them to achieve desired results. Students gain basic and advanced programming skills.

Digital Logic Course

This course in digital logic covers Boolean logic, digital number systems, tri-state logic, flip-flops, gate conversions and gate array logic, among others. Understanding digital logic is a key component of working with digital circuits. This required class is often made up of lecture and lab components.

Electronics Technician Tools Course

Electronics technician students typically take a class on the tools and equipment used for testing and diagnostics. Students practice with tools like signal generators, oscilloscopes, multimeters and soldering irons. Safe behavior and work habits are stressed.
