In Texas, those wishing to teach health education to students from early childhood through grade 12 must pass TExES 157. Earning the TExES test scores required to pass is an integral component of obtaining teacher certification in the field. The test has approximately 100 questions, all of which are multiple-choice questions that must be answered in 4 hours and 45 minutes. Personal Health

Candidates' understanding of various aspects of personal health will be tested in this first domain. Test takers should be prepared to answer questions about the human body and how to stay healthy.

Human Body Systems, Growth, and Development

Test takers need to understand the different structures of body systems and how they function. They will need to know how these various systems keep individuals healthy and ways to help promote health in these systems.

TExES exam questions will also explore topics in human growth and development. Candidates should be familiar with the physical, cognitive, and emotional patterns of development. Test takers also need to know practices to encourage healthy embryo growth and personal health growth over the lifespan, including the emotional and physical changes during puberty.

Nutrition, Exercise, and Physical Fitness

Candidates' knowledge of nutrition will be tested with questions about nutrient sources, how the body uses these nutrients, and how a balanced diet promotes health. Candidates should be familiar with methods for healthy food selection and the factors that affect nutritional requirements. Topics in eating disorders and skills for reading nutritional information will also be evaluated.

Exercise and physical fitness questions will explore topics in fitness components and methods. Test takers need to understand the relationship between exercise and weight and other benefits exercise has on different parts of the body. Candidates also need to be able to create a personal health plan.

Diseases and Disorders

For both communicable and noncommunicable diseases, test takers need to know the:

  • Characteristics of these diseases
  • Common causes
  • Risk factors
  • Treatments

Specifically for communicable diseases, test takers should be aware of pathogens that may be causes of these diseases and the transmission processes. For noncommunicable diseases, test takers need to know about the methods used to detect these diseases and how to prevent them.

Candidates will also need knowledge of human immune response to diseases and how different aspects of the environment can affect health. Familiarity with health-related policies and laws is also required.

Mental and Emotional Health

The final competency in this domain tests candidates' understanding of different factors that affect mental and emotional health, such as interrelationships and environmental factors. Test takers should also understand how emotional health changes at different stages throughout one's life.

Questions will ask about the causes and effects of emotional and mental health disorders and stress. Candidates must know methods for managing stress, grief, and anxiety. They should also know methods for promoting positive mental and emotional health.

Healthy Interpersonal Relationships

Candidates need to understand how various relationships affect one's health. This domain of the Health TExES exam will evaluate test takers' understanding of these different types of relationships and their significance to personal health.

Family Relationships

Family relationships are dynamic, and test takers should be familiar with diverse family structures. Candidates need knowledge of the different roles and responsibilities found within a family and the different factors that affect family relationships.

On the TExES exam schedule, test takers need to be prepared to answer questions about the causes of family conflict and understand how family issues affect the mental, emotional, and physical health of family members. Candidates need skills for teaching healthy family interactions and addressing unhealthy family behaviors.

Interpersonal Relationships, Interacting, and Avoiding Conflicts

Human Sexuality

Questions in this competency will address topics on the factors that affect decisions related to sex and the consequences of sex. Test takers need strategies for teaching responsible decision making regarding sex. Knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases and methods of contraception will be tested.

This competency will also examine test takers' understanding of acceptable ways to express affection, the roles involved in dating, and unacceptable behaviors in relationships, such as rape and abuse. The legal and ethical consequences of these behaviors will also be covered.

Community and Environmental Health and Safety

Candidates' knowledge of health and safety will be tested in this domain on a larger scale. TExES competencies for teachers will examine major health-related issues and challenges that communities face.

Safety Procedures and Emergency Response

Test takers need to be familiar with safety rules and procedures used to promote safety in homes, schools, and communities as a whole. Methods for preventing and avoiding injuries are also tested, including being able to identify potentially dangerous scenarios.

Questions will also explore topics on safe and unsafe behaviors. Test takers should understand how personal behaviors can increase or decrease the risk of negative health outcomes. Candidates will need to know how communities and individuals respond to emergencies, such as home safety plans or implementing CPR.

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Use and Abuse

Test takers must be aware of various legal and illegal drugs (including alcohol and tobacco) and how these drugs affect individuals in the short and long term. Along these lines, test takers should be able to identify different types of addiction and understand how the use of these drugs cause various health problems.

Candidates will demonstrate their understanding of the different factors that can influence the use of drugs and strategies for combating the use or abuse of these drugs. Test takers need to know various intervention and treatment methods for those with drug use problems, including refusal and decision-making skills. Questions will also address school-based efforts to fight drug use in their students.

Community and Environmental Health Issues

Topics about community health will evaluate test takers' knowledge of community health care needs and issues. Candidates should be familiar with community health care agencies, community health problems, and factors that affect the cost and accessibility of health care services. Test takers need to have ideas for how to address these issues.

This competency will also explore topics in health-related policies and laws and how advocacy can help improve community health. Test takers will need to be aware of environmental problems related to health and ways to help reduce these problems.

Health-Related Skills and Resources

Test takers must demonstrate their skills in making health-related decisions, researching health-related information, and promoting health services.

Health-Related Decision Making

Candidates need to understand the wide range of factors that affect health behaviors and decisions. They will need to be able to explain different problem-solving and decision-making strategies that can be used to make positive health-related choices. For example, test takers must understand the role of risk assessment in preventing health issues.

Candidates also need to be able to help individuals develop a personal health plan, which may also include input from family members, health professionals, and others. Test takers will have to demonstrate their skills in planning, goal setting, and problem solving for promoting health.

Sources of Health-Related Information and How to Use Them

This competency is designed to help ensure that test takers know how to find credible health-related information while conducting health research. Test takers need to be able to analyze these sources and combine information to make health-related decisions.

Candidates must demonstrate their critical-thinking skills when evaluating the validity of sources. They need to be aware of health-related advertising and how it affects behavior. Test takers should know how to use information from multiple sources and different types of health sources.

Health-Related Products and Services

Test takers must know about health care delivery systems and what various health care professionals do. They also need to know about different health maintenance techniques and why these activities are essential.

Candidates will need to demonstrate their skills in analyzing available health treatments and services. They need to understand the different factors that affect how services are selected. For instance, test takers need knowledge of health product marketing techniques, including how to figure out if these claims are valid.

The School Health Education Program

This final domain of TExES 157 Health EC-12 exam focuses on health education in schools. Test takers will need to demonstrate their understanding of their job as a health educator and how to build a successful health education program.
