School Overviews

Telecommunications focuses on the transmission of electrical signals for communication. At the doctoral level it is studied within broader programs like computer networking or electrical engineering. A limited number of schools offer Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs related to telecommunications.

Some of the best schools with Ph.D. Programs in telecommunications include the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the University of Texas at Dallas (UT-Dallas), and Indiana University-Bloomington. All of these schools were highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report for 2017.

California Institute of Technology

Caltech's graduate school ranks 4th in U.S. News and World Report's list of best engineering schools of 2017. The school offers a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, which allows for several areas of emphasis related to telecommunications, such as communications, wireless systems, and computer science. The electrical engineering program at Caltech features several research centers, including the Lee Center for Advanced Networking and the Caltech Center for Advanced Computing Research.

University of Texas at Dallas

In 2017, U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Texas in Dallas's graduate engineering school as 73rd in the nation. The university offers a Ph.D. in telecommunications Engineering, which is the study of creating devices rather than transmitting signals. However, classes cover digital communications, wireless networks, digital signal processing, and wireless communications, among other topics. Courses are also offered in the evening to accommodate part-time study. Students may also opt to tailor their studies to earn a master's degree in telecommunications engineering.

Indiana University - Bloomington

The School of Journalism and the Department of Telecommunications at Indiana University in Bloomington offer a joint degree in mass communications. This program is heavily research-focused, so students can focus their studies specifically on telecommunications. Graduates are prepared for academic research positions and high-level jobs in government and media organizations. For 2017, the school was ranked #36 among all public schools by U.S. News & World Report.

Telecommunications Ph.D. Programs

Here are some other schools offering telecommunications-related doctoral programs:

College/University Name Location Distinction
Kansas State University Manhattan, KS Ph.D. programs are available in electrical engineering or computer science; students have up to seven years to complete the computer science Ph.D.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MA Graduate students in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science can pursue research in circuits, information systems, and signal processing
Michigan Technological University Houghton, MI Offers Ph.D. programs in both electrical engineering and computer engineering
New Jersey Institute of Techology Newark, NJ Students can apply for a Ph.D. in either electrical engineering or computer engineering
Rochester Institute of Technology Rochester, NY Offers a Ph.D. program in computing and information sciences that focuses on cyberinfrastructure
University of California - Berkeley Berkeley, CA College of Engineering offers Ph.D. programs in engineering or computer science with areas of emphasis in new media; communication, computation and statistics; and computational science and engineering
University of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, PA Ph.D. is offered in telecommunications and networking; students have a maximum of six calendar years to complete the program

Students who want to pursue doctoral studies in telecommunications can find relevant Ph.D. programs at well-regarded institutions. Some programs focus more heavily on the engineering aspects of the field, while others emphasize media studies.
