Essential Information

Sonography programs provide students with the necessary training to perform ultrasound procedures and gain employment in the field. Programs in Georgia are available at the certificate, diploma, and associate's degree levels. While degree programs include general education courses, diploma and certificate programs may concentrate entirely on coursework directly applicable to the field of diagnostic medical sonography and ultrasound. All such programs include practicum or clinical experiences in the field.


Columbus Technical College

This college in Columbus has a program in diagnostic medical sonography that educates students through didactic coursework and practical experience. Students must complete 65 credits of sonography courses in sonography instrumentation, pelvic sonography, abdominal sonography and vascular sonography. The program provides practical experience through clinical sonography requirements. A registry review course of obstetric, gynecological and abdominal sonography procedures is also required.

Darton State College

Located in Albany, Darton State College offers an Associate of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography program that requires students to complete 72 credits. Students in the program learn about abdomen ultrasound, pelvic ultrasound and ultrasound physics. The program requires that students complete clinical observations and practicums.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College

Georgia Northwestern Technical College is located in Rome and offers a 98-credit associate's degree program in diagnostic medical sonography. Students learn how to create visual pictures using high frequency sound waves for diagnostic purposes. Students take courses in sonographic physics, clinical sonography and vascular sonography. This college also provides a registry review of abdominal, obstetric and gynecological topics.

Grady Health System Professional Schools

This school is located in Atlanta, and it offers a certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography. Applicants need to already have at least an associate's degree in radiologic technology or a related healthcare field. The 18-month program teaches students how to record and evaluate images by positioning patients and calculating the proper exposure.

Gwinnett Technical College

Gwinnett Technical College is located in Lawrenceville and offers a 98-credit diagnostic medical sonography associate's degree. Courses cover topics in sectional anatomy, sonographic physics, sonography instrumentation and abdominal sonography. Students have a chance to apply what they learned in the classroom with four clinical sonography experiences. Interested students may also earn a certificate in healthcare science that is designed for those who may want to continue in diagnostic medical sonography.

Ogeechee Technical College

Located in Statesboro, Ogeechee Technical College offers a diploma in diagnostic medical sonography and echocardiography. The diagnostic medical sonography diploma is 88 credits and includes coursework in abdominal sonography, health science physics, sonography instrumentation and sonography physics. Echocardiography courses include cardiac anatomy, cardiac physiology, pediatric echocardiography and vascular sonography.

Career Requirements

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs has accredited the sonography programs at Columbus Technical College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College, Grady Health System and Ogeechee Technical College. Licensure isn't required to work in the field; however, certification may be preferred by employers, which requires graduating from an accredited program and passing exams.
