Valve repair is a complex and difficult aspect of industrial repair, meaning that mechanics wishing to master this concept must have extensive training and experience. Although courses dedicated solely to valve repair are rare, the concept is often featured in courses relating to topics such as braking systems and engine repair. Most courses focus on valve repair as it relates to automobiles, but certain classes study valves in larger machines such as pipelines. Mechanics wishing to focus on valve repair may seek certification as a Valve Maintenance Technician. The following list contains a few examples of concepts that are commonly featured in valve repair courses:
- Gate valves
- Maintenance reviews
- Seat leak testing
- Ball valves
- Butterfly valves
List of Valve Repair Courses
Small Engine Repair Course
This course provides students with an introduction basic small engine care and maintenance. Included in the course is instruction about valve repair, as students learn about choke valves and ports. Students will study the internal mechanics of small engines and explore the role of valves in the functional operation of a working machine.
Antilock Brake System Course
Antilock braking systems are far more complex than standard braking systems, and as such they usually have a course reserved solely for them. This course will introduce the importance of an antilock brake system as well as the fundamental strategies used in maintaining and repairing it. Valve repair plays an essential role here, as both solenoid and motor-driven valves are involved in this braking system, and through this course students will come to understand how these valves operate.
Valves & Actuators Course
This course offers entry-level instruction concerning the operation and maintenance of the most typical actuators and valves found on pipelines. Students will study the various types of valves, such as petroleum valves, and examine their working relationship with actuators. This course will sometimes feature field visits in which students visit facilities to gain firsthand experience and observe valve assembly techniques.
Valve Technician Course
For students who believe they have mastered the field of valve repair, many programs offer courses that allow for certification as a Valve Maintenance Technician. Courses of this nature specialize in proper installation techniques, troubleshooting and problem-solving, replacement of faulty parts, and control valve calibration. This course is normally reserved for students with prior valve repair experience.
