Columbia University is a private institution in New York City. Founded in 1754, the university is of the oldest in the United States and is recognized as one of the finest schools in the world. Columbia is a member of the Ivy League, a group of eight colleges and universities renowned for academic excellence and civic leadership. The university is ranked 9th overall in the 2008 report of America's Best Colleges from U.S. News & World Report and features strong academic and research programs in medicine, law, engineering, journalism, architecture, business and the arts and humanities.

The Columbia campus is set on six city blocks in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Known for impressive academic facilities, the school includes a vast network of engineering laboratories, research libraries and technology hubs. Students of the sciences, however, are not the only beneficiaries of the school's considerable resources. The school also has partnerships with many New York cultural organizations allowing students to practice their respective crafts at distinguished institutions throughout the city.

Columbia offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs through 3 undergraduate schools and 13 graduate and professional schools. Interdisciplinary studies are also encouraged allowing students to craft their own curriculum with the oversight of faculty. Individual student attention is an important feature of the Columbia experience, as demonstrated by the school's remarkable 6:1 student-faculty ratio. Columbia has an undergraduate student body of more than 7,000. One of the 'most selective' schools in the nation, the university has a freshman acceptance rate of just 12 percent. Incoming students have a grade point average of 3.8 and typically score in the 1330 to 1540 range on the SAT and between 28 and 33 on the ACT.
