Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, with its main campus is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, adjacent to Boston. Harvard is a private university and member of the Ivy League, and U.S. News & World Report recently ranked Harvard #2 in the nation among America's Best Colleges.
In addition to its status as a renowned provider of a public policy and government education, Harvard ranked in the top 40 for its programs in engineering and engineering science. The university also maintains the largest academic library in the world with over 15 million volumes in eight individual libraries.
Harvard awards certificates, as well as bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees through nine major schools. The two most popular majors are economics and political science, followed distantly by psychology, English language and literature, and social sciences. Students participate in small classes, and the student-to-faculty ratio is just 7:1.
Students participate in an abundance of campus activities and organizations, numbering well over 300. Harvard student athletes participate in non-scholarship varsity sports in N.C.A.A. Division I competition.
Harvard men and women represent a very diverse student population and hale from every region of the United States and more than 100 other countries. Nevertheless, it is ranked as one of the 'most selective' undergraduate colleges in the nation with just a 9 percent acceptance rate. Incoming freshmen typically submit SAT test scores between 1,390 and 1,590 and 95 percent of students graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school classes.
