There are a few options when looking for a career in landscape design. Anything from a gardener to a landscape architect can be grouped in this area. Landscape architecture is the most lucrative of these careers. Landscape architects and designers can work all over the world once they have received the proper training and certification.

Introduction

Landscape architects and designers provide businesses, homeowners and public parks with nature elements that are both functional and visually appealing. Landscape architects work on everything from parks and playgrounds to shopping centers and college campuses. Their main responsibility is to design landscape surroundings.

Job Duties and Skills

Those interested in landscape design usually enjoy nature and working outside with their hands. They are artistic and creative and have good communication skills. Computer skills are also essential since many landscape architects use computer-aided design programs to create and present designs to clients. The ability to work within a budget is required, as is having knowledge of how climate, location and seasons can affect a landscape design or project. Some landscape architects use geographic information systems technology or computer mapping systems to plan, implement and demonstrate their design projects. Nearly all spend time consulting with other professionals, such as architects or civil engineers. Landscape architects and designers should be able to produce detailed sketches and models of their design in order to be approved by the client, employer or other professionals on the job. Landscape architects should also be familiar with the materials needed to complete projects.

Training Required

All but one of the 50 states require landscape architects to be licensed. Before taking the licensing exam, an aspiring landscape architect must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college and up to four years of supervised experience in the field. Typically, there are two types of undergraduate degrees in this area: a bachelor of science in landscape architecture or a bachelor of landscape architecture. Most programs include the study of subjects, such as art, construction techniques, and natural and social sciences. Many colleges also offer a master's program which can take up to three years to complete as a full-time student. All graduates are required to take a licensing exam administered by the council of Landscape Architectural Registration before working as an architect. Licensing exams focus on soils, plants, laws, environmental regulations and other requirements that may be unique to the state granting your license.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities for landscape architects will be found most often in urban and suburban areas. Those who work for federal government organizations may find themselves in more rural areas for things, such as park and recreation area designs. Quite a few landscape architects are self-employed. Many can also be found working in the architectural or engineering industries.
