The Microsoft Office Specialist--or MOS--certification is a multi-tiered series of exams that validate one's skills on the computer application suite known as Microsoft Office. Individuals with this certification are often referred to as Microsoft Office User Specialists or MOUS.

The Microsoft Office User Specialist program, or MOUS, is a Microsoft-approved certification program that validates a person's expertise with one or all of the programs in the Microsoft Office suite. Certifications can range from individual applications to the full suite of programs.

Job Skills and Duties

To become Microsoft Certified Office Specialists, individuals need to be familiar enough with Microsoft Office programs to pass a certification test. Certifications exist for several different Microsoft Office desktop productivity programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access and Microsoft Project. Microsoft Word is a word processing component that requires users to know how to format text, merge letters with data sources and insert or modify objects. Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that requires knowledge of the different tools available for data analysis, including filters, data validation, ranges and formulas. Microsoft PowerPoint requires the ability to build presentations with the correct use of transitions, timing and slides. Microsoft Access requires the ability to create, modify and query databases. Microsoft Outlook is an email program and requires familiarity with email concepts, account setup, and formatting. Microsoft Project is a project management tool that requires working knowledge of the program's many organizational, collaborative, and labor-saving features.

Training Required

The Microsoft Office Specialist certifies people on three levels: expert, master and specialist. Specialists only need to pass one of the five exams available. Experts are those who have passed both the Word and Excel exams. Masters must pass the Word, Excel and PowerPoint exams, in addition to the Outlook or Access exam. There are many ways to acquire the skills necessary to pass the Microsoft Office Specialist exams. Some people rely almost entirely on first-hand experience with an office program before signing up for the exam. Self-study is assisted through a variety of study materials, published by Microsoft and other companies. These materials walk users through the finer point of a program and the specific requirements of the exam. Training can also be obtained through seminars and individual classes that last anywhere from a few hours to several weeks.

Well Known Jobs within This Field

Microsoft Office User Specialists can apply their skills to a variety of jobs in the business field. Individuals who are at the master level can seek out instructor positions. Training institutions and corporations frequently hire master-level experts to train students and workers in Microsoft Office products.

Microsoft Office programs are used around the world. Employers love to hire people who can demonstrate their expertise in various programs. Obtaining a Microsoft Office User Specialist certification can make you stand out against other applicants and boost your chances of getting hired no matter what industry you work in.
