Job Skills and Duties

Mechanical engineers need to learn a great deal about mechanical design, as well as physical science before they can contribute to the field. Most engineers design and develop power-producing machines, like generators and engines, or power-using machines, like elevators and manufacturing robots. They also design tools, devices and other useful items with small moving parts. Although some drawing is done by hand, most engineers utilize computer aided design programs to develop their projects. Other complicated computer programs are used later to conduct virtual simulations of proposed designs and completed projects. Engineers must be intimately familiar with thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and kinematics to design and manufacture their products.

Training Required

There are a number of different colleges and universities across the U.S. that offer the education required to become a mechanical engineer. Most programs offer courses in math, physical science, mechatronics, computational simulation, solid and fluid dynamics, micromechanics and biomechanical engineering. A bachelor's degree is almost always required for entry-level positions, though some students choose to break into the industry with a two-year engineering technology degree. Licensure is generally not required to work as a mechanical engineer, however, many professionals will seek certification in their state.
