Job Skills and Duties

School counselors need to be caring and compassionate people who enjoy providing encouragement and support to children. A big part of their day includes helping students to make good choices.

School counselors administer vocational and career assessments, help students explore career options and help them plan their school experience to match their career goals. This includes helping them find internships, decide on vocational fields or select colleges and seeking financial aid. They also write trade school and college recommendation letters.

At the elementary school level counselors observe and evaluate children to identify strengths and weaknesses or special needs. At all levels, school counselors help students deal with behavioral and personal problems. They often run programs to identify and prevent drug and alcohol abuse in their student population.
