Taking a Gap Year Between High School and College Video Overview

  1. Gap Year
    • By deferring admission or delaying one year after high school to apply to colleges will not hurt your chances of being accepted to a good school, and, in fact, it may even enhance your chances of getting accepted.
    • Harvard University recommends on their admissions acceptance letter that you consider delaying enrollment for a year.
    • Some colleges, such as certain University of California campuses, do not accept deferred enrollments.
  2. Gap Year Activities
    • Delaying or deferring admission to college can be rich and rewarding if you experience a particular language or culture by living abroad with a host family for one year or simply work for a year, learning what it takes to hold a job.
    • Many high school students feel burnt out after graduation, and taking a gap year off can help reinvigorate students to take on the challenge of college.
