Timeline for Applying to College Video Overview

  1. Freshman and Sophomore Years
    • Take the most rigorous courses you can handle during your freshman and sophomore years because college admissions counselors are looking for the best grades earned in the most rigorous courses.
  2. Junior Year
    • You should take the PSAT either at the end of your sophomore year or early in your junior year of high school.
    • In the spring of your junior year, you should take the SAT examination.
    • Make sure you get to know your guidance counselor well so that he or she has something personal to add to your letter of recommendation rather than the standard form letter.
  3. Senior Year
    • If you are applying for early decisions to colleges and universities, make sure your applications are sent by the fall of your senior year.
    • For regular decision college applications, select the schools where you want to apply and get your applications out during the late fall and early winter of your senior year.
    • Likewise, apply to most private colleges in late December to January unless the school application states otherwise.
