The University of Southern Mississippi is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The most popular undergraduate majors are business, administration, elementary education, nursing, psychology and parks and recreation. The University of Southern Mississippi provides certificates in addition to bachelors, masters and doctoral level degrees.

The University of Southern Mississippi, which is located in the urban community of Hattiesburg, is a comprehensive research university. It holds the designation as a 'Carnegie Doctoral Research University' placing commitment on graduate education while holding a wide range of baccalaureate programs.

The university is noteworthy for several of its programs and facilities, including its major polymer science research center, a nationally recognized writer's center and one of the strongest music programs in the southeastern United States. In fact, its wind ensemble and symphony orchestra are considered to be among the best in the nation.

Southern Mississippi awards certificates, as well as bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in 90 academic programs. Nearly 20 percent of students major in business administration. Other popular majors include elementary education, nursing, psychology, and parks and recreation.

Pre-professional programs are also offered in law, dentistry, medicine, veterinary science, optometry and pharmacy. Career services assist students with job placement, and 92 percent of graduates enter the job market in a field related to their major with one year of graduation.

In addition to more than 250 clubs and organizations, Southern Miss students also participate in the second highest rated intramural sports program in the nation. The university is home to 16 N.C.A.A. Division I Conference USA sports.

Southern Miss is considered 'selective' in its admission process with a 60 percent acceptance rate. Typical incoming freshman carry a grade point average of 3.1 and submit ACT test scores between 19 and 25.
