Vocational schools in New Jersey provide area students with a wide variety of training programs that prepare them for immediate job placement as well as to transfer to 4-year colleges. Programs are available in areas such as culinary arts, hospitality management, drafting, computer networking and carpentry. Ocean County Vocational Technical School

Since 1959, Ocean County Vocational Technical School has served Toms River and surrounding Ocean County communities with training for entry-level jobs. In addition to programs for high school students, this vocational school in NJ offers an adult evening program. A career center provides interest inventories and vocational counseling before adult students select from the various programs offered.

Apprenticeship Programs

Apprenticeship programs are available for aspiring electricians, plumbers, HVAC-R specialists and maintenance mechanics. Lasting 1 to 4 years, registered apprenticeships include about 2,000 hours of on-the-job training annually, in addition to a minimum of 144 hours of classroom instruction.

Culinary Arts Program

Beginning and advanced culinary arts courses are available as part of a full-time adult vocational training program. The 1-year program includes eight fields of focus, including dining room operations, sanitation and food preparation. An advanced version of the 10-month program is available called 'Cuisine on the Green at Atlantis.'

Practical Nursing Program

The accelerated practical nursing program takes 44 weeks to complete. Graduates from this state-approved class are eligible to take the written and skills performance tests for New Jersey board license.

Pre-engineering Technology Program

This 2-year program introduces adult students to drawing with AutoCAD, the most prevalent computer-aided drafting software program. Computer and drafting fundamentals are learned through basic projects in architectural and mechanical drawing. Students gain hands-on practice in topics such as 3D printing and computer aided manufacturing.

Custom Woodworking/Cabinetmaking Program

This 2-year program provides the skills to become a professional woodworker or carpenter. Woodworking tools and machines, materials and joinery techniques are explored through hands-on projects.

Bergen Community College

Bergen Community College's main campus is in Paramus, NJ; satellite campuses are located in Lyndhurst and Hackensack. Almost as many adult students are enrolled in Bergen's adult and continuing education programs as are enrolled in for-credit certificate and associate degree vocational programs. There are more than 32,000 total students, with 17,000 enrolled in credit programs that lead to entry-level careers and further educational opportunities.

Hotel, Restaurant and Hospitality Programs

In addition to the general hotel, restaurant and hospitality track and business administration hospitality track in the associate's degree program, students may choose to earn one-year certificates in the culinary arts or sciences, event planning or hospitality management. Several certificates of achievement are also available.

Music Business Associate's Degree

Students take courses in music business and music promotion to earn an associate's degree. Electives in written communication and social sciences are also required. Students participate in a work experience as well.

Networking Administration Programs

Adult students seeking network administration training can pursue a certificate or an associate's degree program. The information technology degree program with a specialization in networking administration prepares students to transfer to a four-year institution after graduation by covering general electives and introductory-level core classes. The certificate program is more specialized, covering network security, and requires previous coursework or prior work experience before admission due to the in-depth knowledge covered.

Morris County Vocational School District

Morris County Vocational School District is home to a continuing education program that provides students with an opportunity to learn career skills, as well as prepare for a high-school equivalency exam and learn English as a second language. These programs include full time programs, apprenticeship programs and adult skills programs, to name a few.

Apprenticeship Programs

There are three apprenticeship programs offered in this school district. These programs include an apprenticeship program for aspiring electricians, plumbers and heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration workers. In these programs students learn on-the job, working with a experts in field while completing related courses.

Pre-GED / Adult Basic Skills Classes

This program offers courses to students to help them improve their reading, writing, mathematics, computing and problem solving skills. Students may take these courses to prepare for the GED exam. It also includes courses for life skills, employ-ability skills and family literacy.
