Capital Area Technical College's Vocational Programs
Capital Area Technical College is a 2-year, public institution offering more than 20 programs that lead to certificates, technical diplomas or associate's degrees. The college merged with Baton Rouge Community College in 2013. Nearly 2,000 students take advantage of the school's vocational training programs.
Technical Diploma in Cosmetology
The program covers hair treatments, styling, waving, hair cutting and hair coloring techniques. Pedicuring and manicuring are also studied. Students practice in an on-campus salon.
Technical Diploma in Welding
The welding program provides instruction in standard processes and techniques, including oxyfuel, plasma arc and carbon arc cutting, as well as shielded metal arc, gas tungsten arc, flux-cored arc, gas metal arc and pipe welding. Students who complete the program are prepared to take the American Welding Society (AWS) entry-level welding exam.
Associate of Applied Science in Drafting and Design Technology
Students gain the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in the drafting field. Coursework includes machine drawing, technical math, dimensioning and pictorial drawing. Several courses focus on computer-aided drafting and design.
SOWELA Technical Community College's Vocational Programs
SOWELA Technical Community College (STCC) provides technical diplomas and associate's degrees in areas related to instrumentation and transportation, business technology, health care, culinary arts and graphic design. STCC is a 2-year, public school accredited by the Council on Occupational Education and governed by the Louisiana Board of Regents.
Technical Diploma in Industrial Electrician
Aspiring electricians learn to install and repair electrical equipment and components in industrial environments. The program also covers blueprint and diagram reading, codes and industry standards.
Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts
Students in this program are provided with basic knowledge of safety and sanitation, food and beverage service, culinary skills and hospitality. Graduates may be eligible for National Restaurant Association Pro Management Certification.
Associate of Applied Science in Aviation Maintenance Technology
The aviation maintenance program prepares students for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification in airframe and powerplant mechanics. Students are provided the opportunity for hands-on training.
Associate of Applied Science in Computer Technology
The computer technology program has a networking specialist option, preparing students for industry-standard certifications, such as CompTIA's A+ and Microsoft's Office User Specialist (MOUS). The curriculum covers hardware, operating systems, Internet technologies and local networking. There is also a programming specialist option, which allows students to take coursework in operating systems, database management and introductory and advanced programming.
Delgado Community College's Vocational Programs
Delgado Community College offers technical diplomas, degrees, and/or certificates in a multitude of vocational areas, including drafting and cosmetology.
Air Conditioning Master HVAC/R Technical Diploma
Students in this program will receive practical instruction in this field. Pupils will learn how to install, repair and maintain systems in domestic, residential and commercial buildings.
Precision Machining Technology Certificate
This program prepares students to shape metal parts on industrial machines, such as drill parts, computer numerical devices, and grinders. Students will also learn about topics like heat treatment and measurement techniques.
Visual Communications in Graphics Design Associate's Degree
Courses in this program cover the design of graphic and textual products. Students will also gain knowledge of web page design, typography, and photographic techniques.
