There are approximately 25 colleges in Virginia that offer certificate and degree programs in Web design or in technology fields related to designing websites or developing for the Web. The nine schools profiled below include eight public colleges and one private, not-for-profit university. George Mason University

The Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University in Fairfax was the first school in the United States to offer a doctoral degree in information technology (IT). At the undergraduate level, the school has a Bachelor of Science in Applied Information Technology program with a concentration in Web development and multimedia. In addition to mobile app and Web technology, the 24 credits of specialized coursework include topics in content management systems, digital media editing and information visualization.

Graduate students may be interested in the 12-credit certificate program in Web-based software engineering. Additional courses in Web design may be available through select degree programs, such as the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Visual Technology or the Master of Arts in Graphic Design.

Liberty University

A church-affiliated school located in Lynchburg, Liberty University enrolls over 64,000 students a year and offers in excess of 300 undergraduate and graduate programs. General degree requirements include 21 credit hours of theology and bible studies.

Through the undergraduate program in Web technology and design, students complete 45 credit hours of major coursework in, among other areas, computer network and Web architecture, database management and programming. They also take 18 credit hours in graphic design and receive training in digital imaging and illustration, 3-D graphics and desktop publishing.

Web development courses can also be found through the undergraduate program in business management information systems, and these include topics in electronic imaging and publishing, e-commerce technology and interactive multimedia.

Lord Fairfax Community College

Middleton-based Lord Fairfax Community College offers six career studies certificates in information technology, including a 16-credit program for Web design and Application Development. General coursework provides an introduction to the IT industry and the Internet. Students also complete a 2-course sequence in webpage design and learn how to create digital graphics. Related topics include a study of database management.

Northern Virginia Community College

Northern Virginia Community College provides academic services to over 50,000 students a year at nine different locations and online, including the largest campus in Annandale.

Through the 25-credit certificate program in Web design and development, undergraduates complete a 2-course sequence in page design, learn how to use multimedia software and become familiar with scripting languages (Alexandria, Manassas, Woodbridge and online).

At the Annandale and Arlington campuses, students can pursue certificate programs in Web design that provide training in the use of Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, JavaScript and/or content management systems.

Aspiring Web design specialists at Alexandria and Loudon can enroll in a 19-credit fast track certificate program, which includes an overview of current industry issues and an optional 3-credit internship.

The associate's program in information systems technology also includes an introductory course in Web design and a study of multimedia software.

Piedmont Virginia Community College

A small school based in Charlottesville, Piedmont Virginia Community College has an annual enrollment of just over 5,000 students. Program offerings include a 16-credit certificate program in Web technologies that can help future professionals prepare for positions as animators, content developers, designers and multimedia artists. This short-term course of study provides undergraduates with an introduction to computer graphics and design and includes a 2-course sequence in webpage development.

Southside Virginia Community College

Students at Southside Virginia Community College in Alberta can earn a Career Studies Certificate in Website Development or an Associate of Applied Science in Information Systems Technology. The 21-credit certificate curriculum includes a 2-course sequence in webpage design and an elective in digital graphics or interactive media. Students also take related courses in database development, e-commerce and networking.

Courses in Web design may be used to fulfill the 9-credit elective requirement for the associate's program, a plan of study that includes topics in software use and programming, a final seminar and a project.

Thomas Nelson Community College

Thomas Nelson Community College offers more than 40 academic and career training programs at its two locations in Hampton. The information systems technology program includes six different career study certificates, two of which are related to Web development and design.

The 27-credit certificate program in Web design and e-commerce requires courses in graphics, interactive media and programming languages. Similar topics can be found in the 20-credit Web specialist curriculum, and students also receive an introduction to database management, the Internet and networking.

Tidewater Community College

At 46,000 students, Tidewater Community College in Norfolk has the second-largest undergraduate population in the state, and instruction takes place at four area campuses and several specialized learning centers. These include a 23- to 24-credit certificate program in Web development that provides students with an introduction to the Internet and networking and includes topics in page design and server management. To fulfill the 7- to 8-credit-hour elective requirements, undergraduates can choose courses in interactive design, Web graphics or programming.

Both the certificate and the associate's programs in information technology allow for a specialization in Web development and require the same courses found in the career studies curriculum.

Virginia Western Community College

Located in Roanoke, Virginia Western Community College offers certificate and/or degree programs in information technology and Web media. Relevant resources include a career center that can help students find jobs in the field.

The 22-credit certificate program in Web design requires courses in computerized accounting, entrepreneurship, marketing and small business management. Students who pursue the 24-credit program in Web programming receive training in mobile app, page and software design, interactive media and scripting languages.

The 66-credit associate's program requires one course in webpage design, and students can also pursue a 7-course concentration in Web programming.
