Welding programs in Maryland offered by not-for-profit or public schools are limited. Students who want to receive welding training in the state have the option to take basic welding courses, as well as more advanced courses that prepare them for American Welding Society (AWS) certification exams. Award programs lead to certificates, but many individual courses and certification training programs are offered at varying skill levels. Hands-on skills with regard to safety procedures are the focus of all such programs. Read on to find more detailed profiles of the Maryland schools that offer programs in welding and a comparison table for schools' tuition costs and settings.
Allegany College of Maryland
Cumberland's Allegany College of Maryland Center for Continuing Education offers three welding courses. The coursework ranges from basic welding for beginners to intermediate welding courses and prepare students for certification by the AWS. Students can take a course that prepares them for certification in shielded metal arc welding, also known as stick welding.
Anne Arundel Community College
The welding training program at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold provides welding classes at multiple skill levels that lead to a certificate. Beginning welders start their training with a course designed to teach the fundamentals of welding and move on to specialize in one of three distinct methods. Students have the opportunity to earn a Welding for Work - Continuing Education Certificate in TIG, MIG and/or shielded metal arc welding. Non-certified welding courses are also available. The college provides its welding programs through a partnership with Earlbeck Gases and Technologies, a welding company based in Baltimore, where students receive hands-on welding training.
Carroll Community College
The welding program at Carroll Community College in Westminster consists of a basic welding course for beginners and an advanced welding course. This program provides approximately 60 hours of training. Students must wear protective clothing to prevent injury caused by poisonous gases and hot materials. Students will receive AWS certification after passing the certification test offered during the advanced welding class.
Cecil College in North East offers a welding program that trains students for the AWS certification test. This program consists of four modules that teach shielded metal arc welding, along with different cutting processes, inspection and testing of welds, robotic welding and metal surfacing. The college also offers courses on MIG and TIG welding and shielded metal arc welding.
College of Southern Maryland
The College of Southern Maryland in La Plata offers an introductory welding program that prepares students for employment as entry-level welder's helpers. Students who complete the introductory program are eligible to take more advanced courses that prepare them for certification in different welding methods. These certification-training courses cover advanced stick welding, as well as intermediate and advanced MIG and TIG welding.
McHenry-based Garrett College offers an introductory welding program, in addition to more advanced programs that prepare students for AWS certification. The introductory course provides instruction on terminology, safety, stick welding and oxygen fuel cutting. Subsequent courses train students on MIG and TIG welding, fluxed core arc welding and gas voltage requirements for different sizes of metals.
Hagerstown Community College
Hagerstown Community College in Hagerstown offers a welding course suitable for those who have no welding experience. Through the continuing education division, students can also take intermediate courses to learn soldering, brazing and arc welding, in addition to oxyacetylene cutting and welding. Safety and equipment setup are also covered in this course. Welding stations are provided, and students work at their own pace.
The Community College of Baltimore County
Located in Baltimore, The Community College of Baltimore County offers basic, intermediate and advanced welding courses. Like Anne Arundel Community College, this school partners with Earlbeck Gases and Technologies, where students receive hands-on welding training. Training is provided in basic, intermediate and advanced welding techniques, metallurgy, welding safety procedures and oxyacetylene cutting, and some courses prepare students for AWS certification.
In order to become a certified welder, the candidate must perform a weld determined to be sound by an AWS Certified Weld Inspector. After a person is certified, he must submit a certification form every 6 months, verifying that he is still performing the same type of welding as he performed during the certification exam. The AWS certification program is performance-based and doesn't require prerequisite courses for certification.
