Essential Information

There are 29 total schools in Michigan that have welding classes. These are typically part of a welding certificate or associate's degree program. Some of these programs prepare students for industry certifications in the field. Students may also have the opportunity to complete an internship. Students can explore the school options for the 10 largest schools with welding programs by reading below.

Delta College

Welding engineering technology students in Delta College can pursue an advanced certificate or an associate's degree in the city of University Center. The associate's degree program takes 73 to 74 credits to finish while the certificate program is 46 credits. The same courses found in the certificate's degree program are also found in the associate's degree program. These classes include gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, blueprint reading, metals and plate weld qualification.

Ferris State University

Students have the option of a welding technology associate's degree and a welding engineering technology bachelor's degree in Big Rapids at Ferris State University. The associate's degree program requires students to take classes in welding graphics, welding fabrication, quality testing and welding processes. Advanced resistance welding, design of weldments, statistical quality controls and automation controls are classes in the bachelor's degree program. Students can also complete an internship related to welding as part of this program.

Grand Rapids Community College

At Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids students have a certificate and an associate's degree option in welding technology. The coursework differs slightly in each program, but students have the option to pursue classes in technical mathematics. TIG and MIG welding, fabrication, design, welding and testing and oxyacetylene welding are also possible classes in the curriculum.

Lansing Community College

Lansing Community College is in Lansing and it is home to welding technology programs that result in a certificate of completion, a certificate of achievement and an associate in applied science. The certificate of completion program is 18 credits, the certificate of achievement program is 31 credits and the associate's degree program is 55 credits. Heat treatment and metallurgy, advanced arc welding, gas metal arc welding, tool and die welding, technical writing and pipe welding are all courses related to the welding programs here.

Macomb Community College

Classes that result in welding certification can be found in Warren at Macomb Community College. The courses here are designed to meet requirements in PIPE, TOOL, MIG and ARC welding. The school's welding facility has roughly 8,500 square feet.

Mott Community College

Students at Mott Community College in Flint can pursue a welding certificate. Blueprint reading and technical mathematics are just two courses in this program that help prepare students for the welding coursework. Once in the welding classes, students can explore topics like gas metal arc welding, flux cored arc welding, base metal preparation, shielded metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding.

Oakland Community College

A welding technology certificate program is available in Bloomfield Hills at Oakland Community College. Most of the welding classes here are 3 to 4 credits in length. The certificate program is designed to get students ready for professional certifications in welding. Students are educated on tungsten inert gas welding, pipe welding, metal inert gas welding and metallurgy.

Schoolcraft College

Located in Livonia, students at Schoolcraft College can enroll in programs for welding joining technology, welding fabrication and welding sculpture skills. The welding sculpture skills program is only 19 credits and results in a certificate. The welding fabrication program results in a certificate too and has classes in project mathematics, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metallic arc welding and shielded metallic arc welding. The same coursework is found in the welding and joining technology program which grants associate's degree to graduating students. That program also offers classes that help prepare students for professional certifications in welding.

Washtenaw Community College

Washtenaw Community College is in Ann Arbor and has welding and welding mechanic certificate programs available. Welding students can earn an associate's degree or certificate while welding mechanics majors can get an advanced certificate. The welding mechanics program has classes in layout theory welding, basic fabrication, specialized welding procedures and shape cutting operations. The curriculum for the other welding major is about the following topics: oxy-fuel welding, shielded metal arc welding and blueprint reading.

Wayne County Community College District

Wayne County Community College District is located in Detroit and has certificate and associate's degree programs in general welding, advanced welding, specialized welding and welding technology. The certificate programs are 28-32 credits and have several welding and fabrication courses in them. Students take similar coursework in the associate's degree program, however, students pursuing an associate's degree also get to take courses on pipe welding, technical communications and occupational safety. The school also offers a 37-credit certificate program in artistic welding.
