Essential Information

Numerous schools in West Virginia offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in various teaching and education disciplines. These programs include traditional programs leading to elementary or secondary school teacher certification as well as specialized programs in such fields as curriculum and instruction, special education and reading education. Programs often feature further specializations in a subject area, special education area or reading education area. Students can choose from online and blended study options at some schools, although any required student teaching is still done at an area school.

West Virginia University

Western Virginia University was established in 1867 in Morgantown, making it the flagship land-grant university in West Virginia. The College of Human Resources and Education offers several graduate degree programs in education.

The school's elementary education master's degree program is offered in online, on-campus and hybrid formats. It features three concentration areas that include subject area curriculum and methods, electives and general education. The master's degree program in secondary education is available with emphases in early childhood education, science, foreign language, English, mathematics or social studies. There are also related certificate programs for students who already have teaching certification but desire certification in a new area. The master's program in literacy education does not require any student teaching but leads to pre-K through adult reading specialist certification in West Virginia.

The curriculum and instruction doctorate degree program is intended for students seeking careers at the college and university level. This program includes general curriculum and instruction classes, research projects and area of specialization courses based on the students' interest. Graduates of the special education doctoral program are prepared to work with children, adolescents or adults in various disabilities. A research-based special education doctoral degree program is also offered that prepares graduates for careers in leadership positions.

Marshall University

Marshall University, founded in 1837, is located in Huntington and has a College of Education and Human Services that offers teaching education programs. The school of education is one of the university's largest divisions, and it offers bachelor's degrees for teaching certification and master's degrees in literacy education, elementary education, secondary education, special education and teaching.

Students in the secondary education bachelor's degree program can choose from various comprehensive specializations, such as art education, English, health education, music education, physical education, chemistry, social studies and biological science. Students may also choose from among two or more certification areas for grades five through nine. The school's master's degree program in special education offers areas of specialization that include mental retardation, learning disorders, behavior disorders, gifted children and preschool special education.
