Human resources management certificate programs typically include workers compensation classes, and some short programs and single college courses specifically covering workers compensation are available. List of Workers Compensation Classes

Introductory Workers Compensation Course

This is one of the first classes in a workers compensation program. Students examine their state's workers compensation procedures from the occurrence of a work-related injury or illness to the final resolution of the claim. Students learn the roles and responsibilities of the claimant, employer, healthcare provider, insurance company and workers compensation office staff. Fraudulent claims are discussed, as are relevant state and federal laws.

Disability Law Course

Students enrolled in this class gain a working knowledge of state and federal legislation related to disability and employment. Specifically, the course will focus on the Americans with Disabilities Act. Lessons cover fundamental concepts in accommodating disabilities in the workplace and facilitating affected employees' return to work. Instructors teach students about the requirements and obligations on part of the employee and employer in workers compensation cases that involve a disability.

Medical Claims Course

Students in this workers compensation class develop the skills needed to understand and evaluate medical reports and statements submitted in regards to workers compensation claims. Coursework includes an exploration of physical injuries commonly sustained in the workplace, including causes and treatments.

Claims Handling and Processing Course

This class emphasizes the procedures and laws that relate to processing workers compensation claims. Students learn the standards for reporting, investigating and settling claims. Different kinds of claims and appeals are covered in the class. Students are also advised on how to work effectively with health care providers, attorneys, employers and insurance companies.

Fundamentals of Insurance Course

In this typically required class, students explore how workers compensation policies are purchased and how premiums are set. Cost controls are discussed, along with employers' possible alternatives to purchasing workers compensation insurance. If it's part of a certificate program, this class is usually taken toward the end of a program of study.
