Essential Information

The AART has certifications in five different radiologic specialties, including a radiographic certification that covers X-ray technology. To qualify for this credential, applicants must have successfully completed an accredited program that has been approved by the AART and a certification exam.

There are specific fields of study in X-ray certification programs, including: radiation therapy, nuclear medicine technology, magnetic resonance imaging, and sonography. X-ray technology may also be covered in associate's and bachelor's degree programs.

X-Ray Certification Program

The basic coursework required by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists for certification in X-ray technology includes the following:

  • Medical and X-ray terminology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Pathology
  • Radiation biology
  • Radiographic orders
  • Clinical practices

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov), the number of jobs for radiologic technologists should increase 9% between 2018 and 2028. In May 2019, the average hourly wage for these jobs was $30.34, which is $63,120 annually.

Continuing Education

Certification must be renewed on an annual basis. Continuing education courses are required, which may be met in one of three ways. The first is 24 contact hours of approved courses each biennium. Second is to earn certification not previously received in a second primary radiologic field. The third choice is to earn a new post-primary certification.

Career Information

Individuals can become an X-ray or other radiologic technologist through a 2-year program. The X-ray technician position requires a bachelor's degree. The two jobs are much the same and involve the maneuvering of radiographic equipment in order to take pictures of various parts of the inside of a person's body. However, the technician is more likely to be able to secure a supervisory position or to interpret data.

This critical information about the different AART certification programs in x-ray technology will allow you to understand the expectations post-graduation, as it pertains to job outlook, salary, and keeping up with certifications.
