Understanding the GACE English 6-12 (713) Exam

The GACE 713 English exam, administered through Pearson, is required for certification to teach English to students in grades 6-12 in Georgia. This Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) exam evaluates candidates' knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and literary analysis to ensure that they are prepared to teach secondary English effectively.

GACE English 6-12 (713) Test Overview

The GACE 713 English exam is computer-delivered, with three testlets that have a combined total of 100 selected-response questions. The allotted testing time for all three testlets is 135 minutes, plus 15 minutes for a tutorial and non-disclosure agreement (NDA). You can take any combination of testlets in one session, and the session length varies accordingly. The content categories for each of the three testlets are briefly outlined in the following subsections, which include the objectives that each testlet covers:

  • Reading and Analysis of Texts (6-12): (40 selected-response questions) Testlet 218 has a 60-minute duration, and it assesses two objectives.
    • Objective 0001: The questions assess the ability to understand, analyze, and evaluate informational and argumentative texts, including their structure, central ideas, evidence, credibility of sources, summaries, graphics, distinctions between fact and opinion, and use of rhetorical techniques.
    • Objective 0002: Items test the ability to analyze literary texts, including genres, literary and structural elements, word choice, plot, character, setting, themes, perspectives, and ways that authors from diverse cultures and periods address social, cultural, and political issues.
  • Writing, Research, and Multimedia Texts (6-12): (35 selected-response questions) For Testlet 219, examinees have a 45-minute time limit, and their knowledge related to two objectives is tested.
    • Objective 0001: The items assess writing skills, including planning, structuring, revising, and publishing texts; using proper style, grammar, evidence, and cohesion; and effectively developing ideas, arguments, and narratives.
    • Objective 0002: Questions require examinees to demonstrate research and media literacy skills, including developing research questions, determining source credibility, using proper citations, analyzing media messages, recognizing media manipulation, considering the audience's perspective, and effectively organizing and integrating multimedia in presentations.
  • Language, Speaking, and Listening (6-12): (25 selected-response questions) Testlet 220 is 30 minutes in length, with questions designed to determine examinees' understanding of two objectives.
    • Objective 0001: The items are meant to test knowledge of vocabulary, reading strategies, and comprehension across text types and levels, in addition to the understanding of reading fluency and its impact on comprehension.
    • Objective 0002: Questions assess knowledge of adolescent and young adult language development, including cognitive, social, and cultural influences; academic language use; collaborative discussion skills; and effective verbal and nonverbal communication strategies.

GACE English 6-12 (713) Exam FAQs

What is the passing score for the GACE 6-12 English exam?

The GACE assessments use a scaled score range of 100 to 300, and for content tests like English 713, there are two possible passing levels: 220 is the threshold for passing at the induction level, and 250 is the threshold for passing at the professional level. You must meet or exceed whichever level that your certification or program requires. For GACE assessments that follow the testlet model (like English 713), after you take a testlet, you'll get a Testlet Performance Report. This report shows your overall score for that testlet, tells you whether or not you met the minimum required "floor" score for it, and gives performance details by objective so that you can see which content areas need improvement.

What is the registration process for the GACE 713?

The registration process takes place online. When you register for the GACE 713, you log into the GACE testing portal, create or use your existing account, answer background questions (for research or demographic purposes), agree to the test participation rules, select up to three score recipients to receive your results free of charge, pay the test fee, and then schedule the test at a test center.

What are the retake policies for the GACE English 6-12 (713)?

Per GACE's policies, if you do not pass (or wish to improve your score), then you can retake the assessment or, for multi-testlet assessments like the GACE 713, retake individual testlets to raise your cumulative score. However, you cannot retake the same test (or testlet) within 30 days of your prior attempt. Each retake requires you to go through the full registration and payment process again.

What is the cost of the GACE English 6-12?

The registration cost of each testlet is $56.50. Therefore, if you register for all three testlets in a single testing session, then you are required to pay $169.
