Boo Radley's Character and Reputation

Boo Radley is a reclusive character from Maycomb who is a subject of rumor, something akin to a local legend. He is often described as a monster by Jem, with horrifying and exaggerated traits. Miss Stephanie spread rumors about Boo, like him peeing on windows. Black residents and others avoid the Radley property in fear of Boo.

However, these initial stories about Boo are based on false stories and surface appearance. Over time, readers and characters learn that Boo is a kind and gentle person who lives a life of solitude for whatever reason.

Boo's Relationship with the Finch Children

Scout, Jem, and Dill create stories and games inspired by Boo's life, and one of their dares is to step on the Radley property. As time goes on, Dill starts to feel sympathy for Boo.

He starts leaving small treasures for the children in a tree knothole in his yard. These include gum, soap dolls resembling the children, pennies, and a pocket watch. He also watches over them, evident when he covers Scout with a blanket during a fire and several instances where he helps the kids when they are in trouble.

Boo Radley's Heroic Actions

Boo symbolizes one of the mockingbirds in the novel, which represent innocence and goodness. However, giving him credit for his heroic acts would ultimately hurt him, as his solitude is what defines him most. Boo reinforces the importance of empathy and understanding for those around you, a concept that is often lost in the town of Maycomb.
