To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel about a young girl growing from naivety to maturity, fitting the category of a bildungsroman. Chapter 3 continues the exposition of the narrator's hometown, introducing new characters such as the Ewells. Burris Ewell is an older child who repeatedly attends the first day of the first-grade class. Walter Cunningham, similarly, cannot move on to the second grade because he spends his springtime working in his father's field. This year, Burris has shown up with lice in his hair.
