What is Expository Writing?

Expository writing is a type of writing that seeks to explain or illuminate. This writing includes essays, newspapers, articles, instruction manuals, textbooks, etc. It differs from creative writing, such as fiction and poetry. It aims to provide readers with information, leaving them with a feeling that they have learned something after reading the essay.

Structure and Approach in Expository Essays

Expository essays are common in academic settings. These typically include an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. When writing an expository essay, it is important to assume that the reader has little background knowledge about the topic. The main goal is to educate the reader.

Types of Expository Writing

1. A Descriptive Essay is a type of expository writing that can be used to describe the characteristics or features of a person, place, thing, process, event, etc. This seeks to stimulate the reader's senses. An example of this is describing chocolate chip cookies using the senses of sight, smell, taste, and touch.
2. Process Writing is used in instruction manuals and technical writing pieces. This should be well-structured with sequential directions. An example of this writing is a software manual with step-by-step instructions.
3. A Comparison Essay shows similarities or differences of two or more things. An example of this is an article comparing football positions, such as wide receivers and tight ends.
4. A Cause/Effect Essay is an essay that recounts events and explains outcomes. An essay explaining the downfall of a student-athlete who used sports-enhancing drugs is an example of this.
5. A Problem/Solution Essay states a problem and then proposes solutions. Newspaper editorials addressing waste in public schools are good examples of this type of essay.
