What do you think would happen if someone took all the sounds in the world away? What if there was nothing but silence? Find out what happens when Milo meets the Soundkeeper as he continues his travels in 'The Phantom Tollbooth.'

As Milo continues on his quest to free Rhyme and Reason in the book, The Phantom Tollbooth, he travels through many strange lands and meets many unusual characters. When he travels into the Valley of Sound, he suddenly has no voice! There is no sound at all in the Valley of Sound! What could possibly have happened?

Using paper and pencil and with the help of a large chalkboard, citizens of the Valley of Sound explain to Milo that their ruler, the Soundkeeper, has locked up all the sounds. They say that, ''For years she ruled as a wise and beloved monarch, each morning at sunrise releasing the day's new sounds...and each night at moonset gathering in the old sounds, to be catalogued and filed in the vast storage vaults below.''

The Soundkeeper is a sad character, described as worried and disconsolate, which means that she can't be consoled, or comforted. She's upset that her people were ignoring sounds and didn't appreciate silence. Milo finds her listening to her favorite radio program, which was all silence.

Silence is as important as sound.
silence

The Soundkeeper's role in the story is to teach Milo, and the reader, that sounds should be appreciated, '' 'It doesn't make me happy to hold back the sounds,' she began softly, 'for if we listen to them carefully they can sometimes tell us things far better than words.' ''

Milo meets the Soundkeeper, a worried and disconsolate character and the ruler of the Valley of Sound. Her job is to file every sound ever made, but now she has locked up all the sounds, and Milo manages to release them. Through meeting her, Milo learns how important it is to listen, but he also learns that there is value in silence.
